Spooks: Omega Team #1 Written by Larry Hama with art by Tim Seeley, Nick Bell and Ed Dukeshire

A few months ago, we were introduced to the Spooks universe with a four issue mini-series. Spooks is a name given to the agents who make up the United States Department of Supernatural Defense. They are a military force that takes on creatures that the rest of the world doesn’t believe exists, like vampires, werewolves, zombies and mummies. Now with this new story, we’re learning that even within the Spooks department there are missions and creatures that are too dangerous for most spooks agents except for a team of agents known as Omega Team. Omega Team is a black-ops task force that even members of spooks don’t believe exist. Now Omega Team is on the hunt for the legendary Lilithu (known in the bible as Lilith), queen of the knight. Lilithu is a demon who is so powerful that she brings the very darkness that is her domain wherever she goes, and it’s up to Omega Team to put a stop to her before she brings hell to earth. I’m usually not a military-minded guy, but this book is becoming a favorite because these characters are real and interact nicely off each other. There is a dynamic to these characters as well as each of them having their own personality and voice. Plus, the conflict that they find themselves involved in has that danger and importance that comes out of the script and makes the reader feel for the characters and the situation they are facing. The art is nice and well-suited for this story, especially since the script calls for creatures that are pretty hard to describe much less bring to life visually. So, all in all, I would recommend that anyone who enjoys comics like GI Joe or supernatural stuff to give this book a try. You might just like it.
Marvel Apes #1 Written by Karl Kesel with art by Ramon Bachs, Javier Mena Guerrero and Jared K. Fletcher

When I first heard that Marvel was going to do a story where all their characters were apes, I rolled my eyes and thought this was going to be a disaster. I certainly didn’t expect to pick up an issue because this wasn’t my style of story. However, I got a chance to see a few pages, and this changed my mind enough to give the first issue a shot. What’s worth noting is that the ending is NOTHING like what you would expect of a book where a gorilla wearing a Captain America costume is the cover. This book sounded silly and preposterous, but what we’ve gotten is a really serious and well-planned out story. I tell you, that last few pages are surprising and take the whole story in a new darker direction. The art is nothing spectacular, but it’s interesting to see what the Marvel Heroes look like as monkeys. My absolute favorite part of the book has to do with a cute interaction between the Rawhide Chimp and Two-Gun Chimp. This was the part that I got to see before the book came out, and this is the part that interested me enough to want to read the book.
